The Golden Age of Radio W1

Today, April 30 is Eve Arden's Birthday,
and QUEEN FOR A DAY premiered this day
in 1945.

Remember the villain Yates on JACK
ARMSTRONG? I don't, but then I don't
pay much attention. Anyway, he's back
asking lots of questions about The
Spindrift as our crew continues the hunt
for Professor Loring. Chapters 3 & 4
of “The Zamboanga Adventure” from
Jan 08 & 09, 1941.

YOURS TRULY, JOHNNY DOLLAR with
Bob Bailey as the man with the action-
packed expense account returns with
Chapters 1 & 2 of The McCormick Matter”
from Oct 03 & 04, 1955. This was the first
of the five-part serials. Not six parts,
Max, five, usually.

On April 30, 1945, Mutual premiered a fav-
orite that was on radio and TV for many
years, QUEEN FOR A DAY, hosted by Jack
Bailey. The show started in NY, but after
a few months settled in to Hollywood.
Several women from the audience were asked
to tell what they needed most, then the
rest of the ladies would vote via the
“applause meter” to select the woman whose
dream would come true. From Feb 13, 1950.

Eve Arden was born this day in 1908. Before
she landed the long-running role of OUR
MISS BROOKS, she was a regular on several
other radio shows, starting with THE
DANNY KAYE SHOW in 1945, then THE
SEALTEST VILLAGE STORE with Jack
Carson. Today, she's Juliet to Danny
Kaye's Romeo in a modern fast-paced
version that spoofs a number of popular
radio shows of the day, such as THE
LONE RANGER and THE QUIZ KIDS.
Danny sings "Rockin' The Alphabet" and
"Accent-u-ate The Positive." With Lionel
Stander, Shirley Mitchell, Bob Jellison,
Harry James and His Orchestra, vocals by
Kitty Kallen, and announcer Ken Niles.
Program #10 From March 10, 1945.

The Horn Speaker

Horn Speaker #460
1. CBS Radio Mystery Theater “How Egbert Won His Wings” 11-07-16
2. I Love a Mystery “The Thing That Cries in the Night Episodes 7-12

This cycle we start off with business as usual.  Then we conclude a perfect example of the best radio serial from Old Time Radio, I Love a Mystery.    When I first listened to this serial I was excited and hooked.  Be careful listening to this series.  You could become addicted too!
From the Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Love_a_Mystery :

“I Love a Mystery is an American radio drama series that aired 1939–44, about three friends who ran a detective agency and traveled the world in search of adventure. Distinguished by the high octane scripting of Carlton E. Morse, the program was the polar opposite of Morse's other success, the long-running One Man's Family.
I Love a Mystery cast (l to r): Russell Thorson (who portrayed Jack Packard) watches Athena Lord (as Jerri Booker) and Jim Boles (Doc). In real life, Lord and Boles were married.
The central characters, Jack Packard, Doc Long, and Reggie York, met as mercenary soldiers fighting the Japanese in China. Later, they met again in San Francisco, where they decided to form the A-1 Detective Agency. Their motto was "No job too tough, no adventure too baffling." The agency served as a plot device to involve the trio in a wide variety of stories. These straddled the genres of mystery,adventure, and supernatural horror, and the plotlines often took them to exotic locales. Over the years, Jack was played by Michael Raffetto, Russell Thorson, Jay Novello, Jim Bannon, and John McIntire. Doc was played by Barton Yarborough and Jim Boles. Reggie was portrayed by Walter Paterson and Tony Randall. The agency's secretary, Jerry Booker, was played by Gloria Blondell.[1] After Paterson committed suicide in 1942, his friend Morse could not bear to recast the role and Reggie was written out of the series. In later shows, Jerry's role was increased, and she replaced Reggie.

Sponsored by Fleischmann's Yeast, I Love a Mystery first aired on the NBC West Coast network from January 16 to September 29, 1939, weekdays at 3:15pm Pacific time, and then moved to the full NBC network from October 2, 1939 to March 29, 1940, airing weeknights at 7:15pm.
In 1940, it expanded to 30-minute episodes from April 4 to June 27 on NBC Thursdays at 8:30pm. Continuing on the Blue Network from September 30, 1940 to June 29, 1942, it was heard Mondays and Wednesdays at 8pm.
Procter & Gamble (for Oxydol and Ivory Soap) replaced Fleishmann's Yeast as the sponsor in the series broadcast by CBS from March 22, 1943 to December 29, 1944 with 15-minute episodes heard weeknights at 7pm.”
