The Golden Age of Radio

This weekend, we feature the recently departed
JANET WALDO on both programs, and beyond.

THE ADVENTURES OF HORATIO HORNBLOWER
based on the novels of C. S. Forester.
#23 Dec 26, 1952 “Damaged Lydia Heads
for Panama.” With Michael Redgrave,
produced by Harry Alan Towers in 1952-53.

Jack continues to measure every step with
his handy Pedometer as he explores a cave
with a flashlight (not expected to be offered
as a premium). Th & Fr Jan 23 & 24, 1941
Chapters 14 & 15 of “The Zamboanga Adventure.”

Janet Waldo, who died on June 12, was born in
Yakima, Washington on Feb 04, 1920. A college
performance caught the eye of Bing Crosby and
a Paramount talent scout, leading to a movie
contract in the late '30s. Her break in radio
came in 1941 when she became a regular per-
former on THE LUX RADIO THEATER, and she
appeared on a great many shows thereafter.
MEET CORLISS ARCHER went on the air in
January 1943, and Waldo soon took over the
lead as the perpetual teenager, carrying
the series until 1953. But you'll have to
wait until Sunday night's show to hear an
episode. We'll get a taste of her teenage
shtick with a bit of Emmy Lou, her teen
character on OZZIE & HARRIET.

This morning, we'll hear some examples of
Janet Waldo's other radio work. And in
what may be a misguided attempt at stunt
programming, we will feature a 6-episode
story arc from THE GREAT GILDERSLEEVE
over the course of the next three weeks,
but you'll need to listen to both
GOLDEN AGE OF RADIO shows to hear
the whole story of Gildy's infatuation
with Leroy's new (and young!) piano
teacher. It starts this morning and
continues on Sunday night on WBAI. Then
back to Saturday–get it? It begins on
“The First Day of Spring – New Piano
Teacher” #242 from NBC on March 26, 1947.

Then, a leading role in another Hollywood
movie series SCREEN DIRECTOR'S
PLAYHOUSE with Douglas Fairbanks Jr in
“The Exile” #3 of the seriesfrom NBC on
January 23, 1949. Director Max Ophuls is
on hand to talk about the movie, a tale
of England's King Charles II's exile in
Holland. With Paul McVey, Lou Krugman,
and Raymond Burr.

It's the end of the line for THE
ADVENTURES OF HORATIO HORNBLOWER,
on his “Return to the Fleet” #24
Jan 02, 1953. Based on the novels of C. S.
Forester. With Michael Redgrave, produced
by Harry Alan Towers in 1952-53.

On JACK ARMSTRONG, the gang encounters
the evil Yates, and Michel is sent to get
help. Still no Pedometer offer though.
Mon & Tu Jan 27 & 28, 1941 Ch 16 & 17
of “The Zamboanga Adventure.”

Hal Peary returns as THE GREAT GILD-
ERSLEEVE for part three of a six-part
story line featuring Janet Waldo as
Leroy's new piano teacher. Gildy
continues to pursue her on a picnic
in “Bird Watchers” from NBC #244

Monty Wooley as THE MAGNIFICENT
MONTAGUE pays a call at the end of June
every year on his way to the parade.
(What's that R Paul?? It's not a parade,
it's a MARCH!) Edwin Montague is a former

The Horn Speaker

Horn Speaker #464
1. CBS Radio Mystery Theater “The Strange Voyage of Lady Dee” 11-18-74
2.  Frankenstein Serial 1932 Episodes 10-11-12
3. Inner Sanctum Mysteries “Judas Creek” 04-17-45

This cycle we start off with business as usual.  Then we continue with the 1932 serial version of Frankenstein.
One of the earliest programs on the radio was FRANKENSTEIN.  Authored by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (08/30/1797 – 02/01/1851), it was first produced for Australian radio starring George Edwards in 1931.  This thirteen episode broadcast was aired over the CBS network in 1932, a year after the Universal film release starring Boris Karloff.  It very closely follows the original book thus differing from the Hollywood film version.
George Edwards (born as Harold Parks, 11 March 1886 in Kent Town, South Australia; died 1953) was an Australian actor and producer.  Edwards was a pioneer of the radio serial in Australia. Prior to that he was a comedian, vaudeville artist, acrobatic dancer and stage performer. It is claimed that he changed his name from Harold Parks to George Edwards at the behest of Edward Branscombe, who was putting together an up-market act and did not want anyone associated with low-brow music hall, and that he took the name from English theatrical impresario George Edwards.[1] He performed in a radio drama adaption of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

a mysterious ex-cop that our boy thinks of as “The Pinkerton Man”. We also

Plus Chapman shows a bit more of his true motives for hiring Harry, and why
is Eugene suddenly being slammed up against a wall?  (NEW)

THE AVATAR: In his time Kincaid, the Strangeseeker has dealt with vampires,
time travelers, aliens from outer space and a guy who makes sculptures out
of Kleenex. However, none of that prepared him for the consequences he faces
