The Golden Age of Radio

It’s TURKEY DAY on THE GOLDEN AGE OF RADIO!
No, not Thanksgiving – that‘s Thursday – but
radio shows so bad that they are just awful!

But first, BUCK ROGERS IN THE 25TH CENTURY
(which might qualify on its own merits to be
included today’s barnyard salute) #5 & 6 from
April 14 & 17, 1939. Kane and Ardala try out
the psychic restriction ray on Black Barney,
to bend him to their will, while Dr Heuer
searches for more Impenetrite from which to
make another gyrocosmic relativator.

We wrap up “A Case of Interrogation”, the
first of our stories from the South African
radio series THE AVENGERS from 1971-72, with
chapters 6 and 7. Do you want to hear more
of these?? Let me know!

From THE AVENGERS to THE AVENGER, who leads
off our parade of turkeys. In 1945, Walter
Gibson was hired to rip off his own character,
THE SHADOW, for a copy-cat series called
THE AVENGER.  In real life he is famous
biochemist Jim Brandon, who is assisted by
his beautiful assistant Fern Collier, the
only person who knows his true identity.
He derived his powers from two inventions:
the Telepathic Indicator, by which he is
able to pick up thought flashes, and the
Secret Diffusion Capsule, which cloaks him
in the black light of invisibility. It’s a
shame the writers forgot about these powers,
which were often overlooked in the scripts
for the weekly stories. Produced in New York
for syndication, the show features a really
cheesy carnival music theme between the acts.
In a sad twist of fate, all 26 episodes of
this series have survived, while so many good
shows have only one or two (if any) examples.
#11 Aug 17, 1945 “The Ghost Murder” with James
Monks.

For our next attraction we need look no further
than the radio sausage factory run by Anne and
Frank Hummert, who were responsible for many
soap operas, and some truly awful detective
shows. Leading the pack was the long-running
MR KEEN, TRACER OF LOST PERSONS, but equally
terrible were their other entries MR CHAMELEON
and HEARTHSTONE OF THE DEATH SQUAD. In a Hummert
show, no character could speak without being
referred to by their full name and genealogy –
take it from me, Max Schmid, your host and
producer, secretly in love with his boss.
Today #20 “The Terrifying Letter Murder Case”
from Jan 10, 1952, starring Alfred Shirley,
who once played Dr Watson in better days.
